An Archaeologist's Travels in the Yucatan by Michael A. Arbuthnot

May 1, 2000: Thoughts on a Plane

Behind me a baby's crying and below me the lush rain forest canopy is rushing past. My trip from Tallahassee to Miami had been easy and the night I stayed in its outskirts uneventful, but as I fly low over the Yucatan jungle, I know the next eight days are an adventure about to begin. I keep asking myself, what's in store? And I still don't know. Team Atlantis has been quiet--like a sleeping dragon waiting to yawn and rise, to spread its wings and soar again. It seems the seed planted in Japan two years ago has taken root and Team Atlantis now has a life of its own, independent of Michael Arbuthnot. Selflessly, I ask again, what's to come? We have 2 digital video cameras (VX1000s), a hydrophone, wireless microphone units, nightvision goggles, communication devices, dive gear, and a plethora of other gadgets courtesy of Chris DeFelice. We are well prepared, but for what? Only time will tell...
